How can I keep lettuce from turning brown?
After I separate the core of the lettuce, it always seems to turn brown quickly. I use lots of lettuce in salads, but if I leave it overnight, it always turns brown and wilts. Is there any thing I can do to slow this process? Besides not removing the core, thank you.
Answers:
I never have this problem. Are you using a knife? Just smack the core on the counter if you want it out, I don't. Then tear off the lettuce you need and refrigerate the rest in a plastic bag.
They used to make bags with tiny holes for freshness, so I just poke the bag to copy that technique. Some companies make green bags that are supposed to do the same thing, but I haven't used them.
Lettuce can not be frozen.
Bleach is used in restaurants cleaning cases of lettuce which are often dirty from the fields, this isn't necessary at home
Rubbermaid lexan food storage boxes with drain holes are used to store many things in a restaurant walk in. These won't fit in a normal size home refrigerator.

wrap it up with that clear plastic and put it in the fridge
Put it in a big ziploc freezer bag and compress all the air out of it before you seal it.
Keep in the fridge!
Eat it before it goes brown....
After separating and washing the leaves, you can "wrap" them in paper towels and place in a large ziplock bag. The moisture from the leaves will soak into the towels and create a moist blanket for the leaves, assisting in prevention of oxidation.
I've heard some people use lemon juice, seems like they would have to mix it with some water though.
Keep it in a clear plastic baggie with holes in it, and keep it moist (lettuce & bag). Supermarkets keep their lettuce moist by spraying it. Keep in a cool place in the fridge. Wrapped in plastic wrap, it can be frozen too. Let it thawl at room temperature. Do not re-freeze.
Someone once told me to put just a little bleach in some cold water and soak the lettuce just a bit. Then rinse off. This is supposed to kill the bacteria that causes it to go bad quickly. I tried it and it does work, but do rinse it well!
Also, at a place I worked, we put it in plastic tubs with a raised bottom with holes in it (possibly called a 'crisper'?) (like a steamer) and put ice chips over and through the lettuce. It worked pretty good.
well at a lot of places, McDonald's for one, use lemon juice to keep apples from browning. I'm sure that using it on lettuce would do the same, but it might taste.... well awful
PUT SOME LEMON JUICE ON IT......IT WONT BE BROWN AND IT WILL BE VERY DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!BU... WHEN YOU ARE READY TO EAT IT....SPRINKLE SOME SALT ON IT SO IT WONT BE SO SOUR......
Wash it.
Spin dry or shake
Wrap tightly in a plastic bag
Keep in crisper bin in fridge
