Good Cantaloupe?!

Question:

Good Cantaloupe?

How do you pick out ripe cantaloupe at the Grocery store?

Answers:
Smell them.

Ripe cantaloupes have a very aromatic, sweet smell to them. You can also knock on them as if you were knocking on a door (a denser-feeling cantaloupe is likely more ripe than one that sounds hollow).

Smell it - it should smell sweat and really cantaloupy.

you look for a good one

There should be just a bit of give at the "belly button", and should be heavy for its size - and should smell sweet, not sweat!

Don't pick one that is too green (underripe) or soft(overripe). I think the best place to buy one is a farmer's market or a fruit stand.

Smell the blossom end. It should have the ripe, luscious scent of melon. If there is no scent; it is not ready.

I smell the tip. If I don't smell the sent of cantalope on the tip then I know its not ripe. Usually is you sniff it and get a strong scent of cantalope its ripe.

thump it, if it sounds hollow and smell sweet it should be a winner...don't pick it if it is heavy and really green on the outside.
