I hope I don't sound like an idiot asking this question, about onions.?!

Question:

I hope I don't sound like an idiot asking this question, about onions.?

I have a bag of onions, cooking style that I have had for awhile. They have now grown, green like stalks on them, can I cut those ( stalks) and use them for cooking as one would a spring onion?

Answers:
Yep. Won't hurt thing! good luck with your cooking!

this is the most idiotic question i have ever seen

Yes you can. They won't taste exactly like spring onions though.

Sure, it's part of the onion! Should be rather tasty too!

Yes, they are still fine as long as they aren't moldy.

Yeah, they're still good. We do that all the time.

I've never don't it when it happens to me, but why not ? It is coming from the onion so, try it and let us know what happen

I don't think that is an idiotic question; I have a bag of sprouted onions in my garage right now and I was wondering if I could still use them. I decided that I'm going to toss them and use unsprouted onions. The green onions are a different type of plant.

You could - but I wouldn't. That is not the best part of that type of onion. Try it first so you know what it tastes like. When you do cut up the onion make sure that it is still tender and moist. If it is dry then throw it out. It has lost it's fava.

That happens to me all of the time and you can use them...they just won't be as strong.

noooooo you will be poisened

You can but they will have a slightly bitter taste so DO NOT add them to food that you are cooking-they work much better as a "green onion" sprinkled on top of nacho dip or enchiladas. If you cook with them I'd recommend using them in stuffing for cornish hens but they will foul the taste of most soups or stews due to the inherent bitterness. Trust me. Been there, done that.

Personally, I don't use the ones that have started growing... not even the greens. Green onions are cheap... go buy some. It'll produce a better result!

Yes cut the green stalks off and use them!!

I use them all the time. The flavor is milder than spring/green onions but use them in the same way. You'll find them to be quite tender in texture.
I love them chopped, sauted in butter and added to mashed potatoes. They're good sprinkled raw over salads.

yes,i have done it alot, i think they taste fresher and not as strong (hot).. just check for mold!!!

of course you can

yep you sure can.
