Is margarine really as bad as the email I read?!

Question:

Is margarine really as bad as the email I read?

I read this email that said that margarine is really really bad for you and is only one molecule away from being plastic. Is this true? Here's the email:

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it
killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the
research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure
out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a
white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring
and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it?
They have come out with some clever new flavorings.
DO YOU KNOW...the difference between margarine and butter?
Read on to the end...gets very interesting!
Both have the same amount of calories.
Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5
grams.
Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over
eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard
Medical Study.

Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in
other foods.
Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only
because they are added!
Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the
flavors of other foods.
Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around
for less than 100 years.
And now, for Margarine..
Very high in trans fatty acids
Triple risk of coronary heart disease.
Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and
lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)
Increases the risk of cancers up to five fold.
Lowers quality of breast milk.
Decreases immune response.
Decreases insulin response.

And here's the most disturbing fact..! .. HERE IS THE PART THAT IS
VERY INTERESTING!
Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC..
This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and
anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added,
changing the molecular structure of the substance).
You can try this yourself:
Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded
area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things:
* no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that
should tell you something) * it does not rot or smell differently
because it has no nutritional value; nothing will grow on it Even
those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why?
Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and
spread that on your toast?

better to eat butter, or try olive oil for cooking

And it comes from the greek world Margaros meaning pearl.
That was the only factoid about margerine I have.

Use Extra Virgin Olive Oil. It's a better oil. You can put some on your bread. I love it.

wow. this is very gross!!!

i dont think so i've always liked margarine.. i always put margarine on my rice.. lol.. and the people who probably e-mailed this dont like margarines that much.. if this was plastic then why the hell would the department of health wanted us people to eat those..

Butter is probably better. Margarin is a 1/2 a molecule away from plastic!!

This e-mail is from someone who has NO understanding of basic High School chemistry! Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is one oxygen atom away from water (H2O), does that mean WATER is a poison?

Don't be fooled by idiots! Read a book! Actually understand something instead of listening to politics and misguided opinion! It feels great...

PS Cars have "been around for less than 100 years" (almost), does that make you want to swear off them? LOL

i never liked the stuff.. only bought it because was cheaper and was easy to spread..
i stopped using it when butter became spreadable...
i never use it now ..that was before i read your mail!!
now i never will and wont give it to my son...
tell everyone...
its the same with donner kebabs do you know whats in THEM!!! they delight in selling them to us too!!!!

Ok all the technical stuff is only the beginning of how discusting margarine really is... The manufacturing and manufacturures are equally as cheap.
I am a construction worker and three of the sickest places I have ever worked are.... Cambells Soup!? Marzetti's salad dressing?? and a margarine plant.
Eat Butter! and exercise Trust me

different margarines have different levels of fat, that article is based on the margarine that came out back in the 60's I think as a butter replacement. there are many choices to make and it's up to you to check, it's not that hard to read them and decide, you don't even have to go to the store to do it, you can do it online before you even go shopping.
If we neither ate nor drank everything there's ever been an article of warning written about, we'd all be in sterile hospital rooms being tube fed.

are u joking!? one thing, margarine is delicous and plus one thing it will not "damage" ur body if u eat tooo much of the margarine! plus if u are doubting this..check the nurtition label on margarine and compare with the butter..it will help u to understand

Boyoboyoboy! The butterpeople have got you spooked. Margarine is made from plant oils. You can eat it that way, close to nature, or you can run the plants through a cow and a churn and eat it as butter. The cow is happy to provide this service and so are the dairy people. It keeps them all gainfully employed. You will notice that their fees are included in the butter price and that's why margarine is cheaper. Moo-oo!

please, please, please!!! don't believe anything you read in an email unless it comes with a link to a reputable source. of the list of health problems, i cant see one that is 100 percent true. anything taken in excess can cause serious health problems. the numbers that it has given are incomplete and possibly incorrect. Maybe butter does have higher saturated fat, but it doesnt say that breast milk itself is quite high in saturated fat. does that mean you shouldn't feed your baby? this is utterly ridiculous.

Margarine has been around since 1869 and was invented by a French Chemist for Napoleons armies who needed a substitute for butter during his campaigns. Since refrigeration was primitve or non existant at the time he needed something like butter that could travel without spoiling.
Their are low fat margarines that are healthier than butter and traditional margarine and may be good choices as butter substitues. Nothing can beet the flavor of a good butter though..
