Is it okay to drink milk on or after it's "expired"?!
Is it okay to drink milk on or after it's "expired"?
I live in New York, so the carton has a sell by date (May 20), and a sell by date if in New York (May 15), which happens to be today. I don't see why New York is so special that we have to drink our milk a little early, but I never can tell if milk is bad or not by just smelling it. When is it "safe" to drink it? Cause I really want to eat some Reese's Puffs right now...
Answers:
The milk is still good up to 2 weeks after the sell by date if refrigeration is OK. That date stamped on it isn't going to make the milk suddenly spoil. If you think it may have gone bad, pour a small bit into a glass THEN smell it, smelling the carton may smell a bit sour because you pour off that every time you pour and it gets crusty.

I worked 3 years at a milk distribution company in upstate NY
It is probably okay, if the date says you should use it by today. If it develops curdles, or turns a yellowish color THROW IT OUT.

the sell by date is the date the store has to have the milk off their shelves but as long as u dont constantly open and close ur fridge ur milk should be good for up to 10 days after that date.
Always follow the expiration date to be safe. When milk has gone bad you will spend countless hours on the toilet or vomitting..dont mess around with dairy products or any rotten foods; even meat that isn't properly heated up can make your stomach hurt
Probably not. I once drank some fresh milk and it was all sour and foul smelling. I was brought to the hospital next day and stayed there for a month.
It is probably safe to drink ON the day, but as a precautionary measure, I always throw out milk even if it is one day past the date.
In case you're wondering, NYC residents have a closer expiration date on the milk because often in cities, deliveries are made at night and shop owners sometimes leave the products outside until the next morning. This causes the milk to spoil sooner than milk which has been refrigerated constantly. While this is not the case a large amount of the time, it happens enough that they decided to enact a law which would change the expiration dates.
Not unless you want to be eating cottage cheese straight out of your milk carton!! I ALWAYS have to check the dates very carefully on ALL of our dairy products from our local grocery stores, because they always stick the latest dated milk WAYYY in the back shelves. I also have to keep a close eye on yogurt, cottage cheese, and of course sour cream too! ;-)
