How long do canned vegetables last?!

Question:

How long do canned vegetables last?

Answers:
Hello:

I have noticed that over the last few years, alot of canned vegetable companies are putting best if used by dates on the top lid of canned vegetables. I always say that if you open up a can of vegetables and it looks weird or smells weird throw it out! There is a saying,"When in doubt throw it out,"and that is very true when it comes not only to canned vegetables, but also many other foods and beverages as well!! ;-)

3 years. See the expiry date.

For many years actually. BUT.....if the can is bulging, leaking, or is rusty anywhere, DON'T even open it. IT IS BAD! It would taste & smell bad and would make you deathly sick, if not even kill you. Also, NEVER buy dented cans, and if you do dent one, use it right away. Otherwise, they stay good for years. But would also taste better, fresher, if used by the "use-by" date. Hope this helps, and God bless you.

Longer than we'd like to think about food being kept! Many companies have a website where you can check a code on the can to find out the expiration date. Check yours to see if they do.

It depends on the can what is in the can s meat fruit etc.and the process best to check with individual manufacturer, are look for best buy date. . The FDA and USDA sets the standards for food safety..Never use a can with a top that isn't solid are is bulging are has dents on the seam the area where the lid and can join, all cans have codes if you are unsure check with the Manufacturer as to there recommended storage time they can tell you when you food was processed and how long it should be good..Below you will find a link to University of Minnesota it is an in depth article on Food preservation and canned food safety this should give you some good info on canned foods safety and average storage times for specific foods and also a link to the FDA on canned food spoilage and a general link explaining canned foods,. If the can are food doesn't look good are smell good do not eat it, If in doubt throw it out!
