Is it wrong or illegal to eat horse meat ?!
Is it wrong or illegal to eat horse meat ?
I ask because I have eaten horse meat before and I have to say it tastes better then fillet mignon .
Question's - Why is horse meat not widely sold and eaten in the U.S. ? Is it illegal in the U.S. , how about in other countries ?
And for my last question - Do you { personally } see it as wrong ?
Answers:
I would say no more wrong than any other alert and sensitive creature. I don't think it is illegal but more to the point something is wrong with this country when people even ask that question. You need to read the constitution, especially amendment 4 and the preample to the bill of rights. Tell our facist government to kiss your . . . We are no longer the most free nation on earth - by a long shot, or even the wealthiest per-capita. We've let outsiders and corrupt politicians rob us blind.
It's not wrong or illegal, it's nasty. Only meat that I eat is Pig and Cows.
Yes it's very wrong and if you look in the bible it will tell you also ask this question on Goggle very interesting question.
Not in France.
American's do not like to eat Horse. Its a cultural thing.
I found this at the Wikipedia. It should be helpful http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/horse_meat...
No, I don't think I would eat a horse...maybe if I was in France.
Customs and Cultures on answering why Horse meat isn't widely sold and eaten in the US. In Muslim areas They don't eat Swine. And In India Cattle are a reglious symbol and not to be eatten.
Yea go ahead and eat old paint. Just be careful to whom and when you serve it to others.
horse meat was popular in europe during worl war II because of the lack of other meat and it was cheap. i dont think many people would openly choose to eat it. i dont think its illegal- i mean you can kill it humanely and eat it on your own i guess
Hmmm...dogs eat it all the time.
I guess there's a taboo involved in western civilizations as many many years ago...horse meat was thought to only be eaten by poor people.
We're funny in the US....we eat pigs and cows and birds and fish...even water bugs (lobster and crabs)....but think of so many other things as "exotic" or weird..but I know native tribes that eat dogs during ceremonies...asian cultures eat cats.
Horse meat is very lean, high in protien, and slightly sweet.
As long as you're not out kidnapping Flika or my little pony...it's not illegal here in the states. Save me a burger!
it's not illegal...it just isnt very popular since people tend to see horses as pets rather than food...people eat bugs too but its not popular here but they are a delicacy in other countries....i guess it's all about ur personal taste....i do not see it as morally wrong...a horse is an animal just as a cow or a chicken is...and alot of people eat those including myself
There was a law proposed last year banning the slaughter and sale of horses for human consumption in the US. I do not know whether it passed or not.
In other countries it is a thriving business. Very few horses are raised for slaughter like cows. Instead the horses are retired race horses and old workhorses.
I personally have no problem with the eating of horse. I never have understood why we eat some animals and not others. Who decided that horses, dogs, or cats should not be eaten? They are meat - they might be tasty.
I don't think it's wrong, I've never had the oppurtunity to eat horse meat, but I would try it if I had the chance. I mean it's not like I'm going to buy my little girl a pony for her birthday, fatten it up and eat it. We raise cows, pigs, chickens to eat why not horses?
AFAIK, horse meat is not illegal for sale or for consumption in the US. There's no company driving this marketing at this point. If someone does, then maybe we'll hear more about it.
If your view is "waste not want not"
Then any restriction on MEAT is ridiculous.
There is not a high demand for other MEAT.
There are SO many sissy people that who manage to get laws that denies our rights Or takes away our freedoms.
NO I don't
I believe even God would be appalled at the waste when the numbers of truly starving people suffer.
Think about MRE's being meat free because of religious law.
dung
Americans don't eat horses simply for the fact that they're seen as the American Icon here. If other countries want to eat horse meat, let them raise their own.
Horse transportation and horse slaughter are in process of being completely outlawed.
Why? The transportation methods they use on horses is meant for cattle. They're treated inhumanely from the start. Horse slaughter promotes horse theft.. Take a look at the links I've provided you with. There's a lot of interesting information as well as images and videos of the slaughtering taking place. We don't ride cows or chickens; horses have been here since the dawn of mankind to help us. They give for us and live for us.
Here's a small poem/paragraph about it: "I am an American. An American Quarter Horse, they say. I've carried soldiers into battle and I've pulled a plow all day. I pulled your wagons over mountains, carried your children in parades. I never asked for much - Just a little water, grass, and hay. I carried the rambling cowboy through the wind and rain and snow. And I was right there with Sam Houston wen we remembered the Alamo. My hooves were fast as lightning when I'd hear that bugle blow. And I've been there to entertain you in a million rodeos. And I'll carry you upon my back just as long as my heart beats. But just remember that I'm an American as you kill me for my meat."
LEGISLATION
Two bills, H.R. 503 in the House and S. 1915 in the Senate, were introduced last session to prevent the slaughter of horses for human consumption in the United States. H.R. 503 was passed in the House on September 7, 2006. The bill was anonymously blocked from a vote in the Senate, so both bills died at the end of the session. H.R. 503 and S. 311 were introduced January 17, 2007. The text of the bill reads:
A bill to amend the Horse Protection Act to prohibit the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of horses and other equines to be slaughtered for human consumption, and for other purposes.
A separate bill ensures that none of America's wild mustangs are sent to slaughter.
On January 19, 2007, the Fifth Circuit court of appeals upheld Texas legislation that would effectively ban the production and sale of any horse meat product for human consumption. Empacadora de Carnes et. al v. Curry. This will eliminate the industry in Texas, knocking 2 of the 3 U.S. plants out of the horsemeat business (the third being in Illinois).
Tell you a little story. Back in the 70's there was a scandal going on about this very thing. I don't remember all the details but horse meat was being passed of in mainstream retail grocers as beef and I think mostly in ground beef. There was some kind of shortage on beef. I remember my mama saying that the horse meat wasn't too bad and it sure was cheaper than the beef.
The reason why it was so scandalous then was because it was found that they were using old decrepit horses for the meat. One reason they are not supposed to use it is biblical but there you go pork is supposed to be biblically unclean too but is deemed fit for human consumption. Personally I have eaten many kinds of meat that would repulse others. Deer, rabbit, turtle, frog and even squirrel.
Deer and rabbit is delicious. I can't say much for the others.
No I have never eaten possum or raccoon lol but people did at one time years ago. They had to or starve but they did it in a clean way. They would trap them and pen them up and feed them corn to fatten them up but they only did it in have to cases.
How is that any worse than eating sushi or cat meat and I know for a fact that the Chinese eat cat.
