Dented canned foods no good?!

Question:

Dented canned foods no good?

The state will fine our company for having dented canned foods in our clients cabinets. What is wrong with food if the can is dented?

Dents could mean a break in the seal of the can allowing either bacteria to enter or bacteria already present to become more active and spoil the contents. Oxygen getting in even without presence of bateria can also spoil the contents.

Really?!?!? What state do you live in? I've never heard of such a thing. I work for a company that houses MR/DD adults and like I said before, I've never heard of such a thing. I live in Ohio.

Probably there is a risk for the cans being punctured along a dent and picking up bacteria. Usually a can is fine unless it is bulging.

I don't think it has anything to do with the food being bad, it's the presentation. Dented cans do not present as well as intact cans. Why is it like that, I have no idea since the food is still good. The dented can should all be donated (in my opinion).

I can't picture where you live
Clients Cabinets??
Dented cans allow the suspicion of air leaking into the food.
Also poor quality in material handling.
No actual loss in food safety but why pay the premium price for damaged goods..??

If it is dented, there is the slight possibility that the can is perforated, and that would mean an air leak, and THAT would be dangerous to the person consuming the product. If you are very sure that the can is intact...not cut...then it's safe to use the contents.

there's nothing wrong with the can, it's their new way of maing money

If a can is really dented it should be thrown into the damaged container.

tin could explode food posining

I see nothing wrong with dented cans. In fact I will buy food with dents in them.

The only reason, in your case, that I could see a dented can being a problem is if one of the clients, since they are mentally ill/disabled, had a problem with a dented can. Like maybe it could set them off, if they are unstable I guess you never really know what might make them have a fit. Like someone with severe OCD or something along those lines. Other than that, if the can is slightly dented, I would use it. But I agree with everyone else in that the contents could go bad if there is an air leak. Think about it though, if there was an air leak, wouldn't the liquid inside leak out also? That's my logic anyways.
