Where do you put your watermelon?!

Question:

Where do you put your watermelon?

Lately Ive been craving watermelon so Ive been buying it often. It seems as if they are all mushy and over ripe tasting. My husband thinks it is because I put it in the fridge for the day before I cut it.. he says I am making it mushy. Is this true? Are watermelons suppose to be kept out of the cold?

Hello dear, I have found a great web site as follows, it may gives you great tips, good luck:

I store it in the fridge too. But you can leave it on the counter before you cut it. (Once it's cut, it should be eaten or stored in the fridge.)

No he's not, other then filled with my favorite Vodka, cold if the best way to eat watermelon, cold or hot is a personal preference. But I think that you are picking them wrong. If you are buying them whole they should sound a bit hollow when you thump them, if you are buying it presliceed it should be pink and not red.

If it is a whole one, I store it on the counter in the kitchen. However, once we cut it, then I cut it all up into small chunks and store it in a plastic container with a lid in the fridge. It seems to last longer this way. I learned a little secret though, even though it may cost a bit more: I buy a quarter or 1/2 watermelon, so I can see what it looks like inside. If it looks too red, the produce guy told me its already going to be soft. So, I tend to buy those watermelons now and they haven't disapointed me yet!

I don't think it's the fridge that is doing it. I've put mine in the fridge to get cold too. However, if I buy it whole then I just leave it out until I cut it. Then you must refridgerate the leftovers. I'd try it his way though...that way if it's still mushy you can say "I told you so". :) Never can get enough of those! ;)

Your buying bad melons putting it in the fridge isn't what making it mushy. Make sure you have a nice yellow bottom and a hollow thump.

It is definitely not the fridge problem. I always put my watermelons in the fridge and it makes my watermelons cold and crispy. I'm thinking the watermelons you've been buying probably aren't the best. One tip for eating watermelons is to add a little SALT. It would make the watermelon taste so much better!
