Answers:
In all the years of restaurant and personal experiance, I've never heard of this.I have heard of storing some vegetables, green table onions, radishes, and things you'd be apt to add salt to to eatraw.I see no reason to wash with salt water. If you have cleaning issues use the produce cleaners offered at the grocery stores

why would you do that? if anything it ends up adding more sodium to your diet, and that is NEVER a good thing - in fact, they say to RINSE canned vegetables for just that reason! so i would say, erhhh NO!

No purpose

No, just use water.

Most use a water to bleach diluted mixture. I'm not sure about the salt thing.

Here's some info on a product called "Veggie Wash."

For clean safe flavorful produce every time:
Spray firm produce, like tomatoes and apples, thoroughly with Veggie Wash, rub for 15-30 seconds, water rinse. For soft produce like lettuce and strawberries, spray, let stand for 30 seconds, rinse thoroughly. To remove wax coatings, run warm water over produce for 20 seconds, then follow directions above. For larger quantities: Add 1/4 c. Veggie Wash? to 1 gal. of water and let soak for 30 seconds, water rinse. Enjoy! Please Note: Broccoli and Cauliflower, due to their delicate nature, should be cleaned in the following manor: Add 1/8 cup (1 oz.) Veggie Wash? to a gallon (half sink full) of water. Soak for 30 seconds, rinse thoroughly.

contrary to what some believe, water will do the trick. washing with salt will give your produce a salty flavor that you probably want to avoid in most cases. if you really feel concerned about bacteria you can do a couple of things.
1.) buy organic produce
2.) buy a good veggie scrub brush
3.) buy Veggie Wash (an actual product made specifically for the purpose of washing veggies and fruits)
