Tuna is really cheap, also make sure you get frozen vegetables for fiber and vitamins.

Kidney beans, brown rice and tomatoes. Add some cumin and or onions for extra seasoning.

take bacon fry it set aside pour out some the greese then two the pot add 1/4 cup lemon pepper add 1 can black beans cook till hot serve over cook'd rice --streachable and cheap

Peanut butter is cheap, too. But get creative: lentils, for example, are cheap to buy, and you can make them with flavors from American (like pea soup) to Indian (with cumin and chilies) and lots of other ways. It's hard to beat beans, there are so many varieties, there's so much you can do with them, and they're not very expensive. Serve them with rice, bread, or pasta for a cheap meal with complete protein.

Also, depending on where you live, there are things you can eat for free. Dandelion greens, for example, are an excellent vegetable. Berries are coming into season in much of the country. There are many others. Check with your local library or (if you have one) extension service for local edible plants.
