How do you eat a fresh coconut?!

Question:

How do you eat a fresh coconut?

Hi,

I am wondering how you are supposed to go about eating a fresh coconut. I remember when I was young, we had one and my dad cracked it open with a hammer and then I just had to dig it little by little with a spoon. It was so horribly difficult.

Does anyone know a better way? How do "normal" people eat coconut -- and I am not talking the ones who just eat it straight from the bag from the store.

I really want to know an easy way to remove a coconut from its shell. There must be a better way than digging it out bit by bit with a spoon.

Please let me know!!!

Answers:
1. remove the furry part
2. then you will see the black dots on the coconut shell
3.hold it in the hand face down black part towards the floor
4. try to break it
5. collect the water in a bowl
6. then break it in small pieces
7. take knife and remove the shell part
wash all the pieces now it is ready to eat

Use a potato peeler (But be careful)or a grapefruit spoon you could also break the coconut up in smaller pieces and just use your teethe to scrape off the coconut

Here's some advice from the asian Guy ,first you must not hammering it ,just bump it adnd make sure if the coconut were divided neatly ,then drink the coconut water first or put it in the jug ,then ,you pry the coconut with a bowl-like spoon ,made from stainless steel ,and put it in the bowl ,enjoy !

Unless it's cracked in the right way, where the meat breaks off in chunks (for skilled coconut openers) the only other way would be to dig it out scoop by scoop.
In fact, that's the only way I know of eating a coconut, and I was born and raise on an island....go figure.

here on guam coconut is the best to us chamorros.

well we have this coconut peeler thingy. it's like a stool with a utensil that is sharp and has teeth. well you open the coconut after husking it (to make holding the coconut easlier) and scrap it against the untensil & right then and there you'll have coconut.

we chamorros do it everyday. it's our culture.

but if you have the sweet and sour coconut (inside) then a spoon will do justice.

hope that helps.

you should cone to guam and we'll teach you!

The way we do it in Asia, where the coconut grows, is we use a sharp parang/machete and we slice the top off. It is not easy and you have to be careful not to injure your self. We pour out the coconut juice which is delicious. The USMU Medics used it as an emergency transfusion in combat in WW2 in places like Guadalcanal, Io Jima and Tarawa. Then, we scoop out the flesh with a steel spoon to eat or cook in curries and desserts. The husk can be used for firewood and making rope. Nothing is wasted. Enjoy!

To get at the coconut you need some tools you wont have in the kitchen. A big heavy sharp knife, like a machete not a butcher knife. You also need to have a thick leather glove for the hand that holds the coconut. Chop/cut at the coconut with the sharp machete like you are skinning it rather than trying to cut it in half. Keep at it and you will get the hang of it. What happens without the proper equipment is you get cut and have to go to the emergency room for stitches before you ever learn to open the coconut.

Riped coconuts has softer fresh and unriped ones is more harder to remove. So you need to choose those that is more yellowish on the outside. Thailand smoked coconuts are the best! They comes in small sizes only.
