Are quail eggs considered to be a delicacy?
I often see dishes on the cooking shows that are made with quail eggs. Why is that? Why not just use chicken eggs?
Answers:
Quail eggs are smaller than chicken eggs and therefore look so much more attractive. They are delicate in flavour and of course rarer than chickens. So scarcity can often make an ingredient that must have thing! Often it is also a fashion thing!
Quails eggs are tiny and so better for making canapes and such like.
Also rather tasty.
A delicacy no.... odd to see yes. Use them if want to adorn a salad, for example, instead of using cut up chicken eggs.
Quail eggs are about a fifth the size of chicken eggs and can be nice as a stand alone hors d'oeuvres or as a detail in a dish, like a poached quail egg on individual portions of hash.
One of the grocery stores I go to sells them in cartons like chicken eggs. I think they are become less a delicacy simply because they are becoming more readily available. They aren't that expensive either, making them within reach to just about everyone.
I'm not sure about them being a "delicacy" but they are definitely harder to come by and cost more pound for pound.
When cooked well done, they are very simular to ordinary chicken eggs.
But if you do the yorks soft or runny, they are creamier than chicken eggs and are more flavorful to me.
