Why do people buy fresh food from supermarkets??
i can see the point for buying dried, tinned food at supermarkets... beer and toilet rolls aswell but why fresh meat and veg??
its far cheaper and far higher quality to go to the grocers and the butchers... do people not care about taste anymore???

thought these answers might come up... lazy... convenience etc.. i applaud all those who do use or grow there own..
as for the lady with the kids.. surely it would be better and worth the hassle to feed your children high quality meat rather than battery farmed crap from the supermarkets... and before you play the money card thats rubbish.. food is cheaper and better when it hasn't travelled 1000 miles... full of preservatives and wrapped in celophene so it cant breathe.. those of you that do not have the shops anywhere near im sorry... this is a real shame and your missing out.. shame the lazy people couldnt hav supported the shops when they were there and everyone would be better off

I'd rather go straight to the farmer, specifically for meat, you can buy a whole pig from around £60.
I grow my own veggies so don't really buy anything 'fresh' from the supermarkets.
Convenience though, or lack of awareness of their local farmers and what services they offer.
For most people it's for convenience sake. personally i go to my local market and butchers for my fresh stuff!
Its for convenience more than anything else.
I don't think it has to do with taste. I think the problem is for example where I live there are no more butchers only Halal butchers which I refuse to give my money to. Additionally, greengrocers don't even exist here anymore only expensive corner shops. The supermarket may not be the best place to buy meat or veg but they have more choice, are more competitively priced and there is nowhere else to get produce from. It's okay if you live in a small town/ village that is still stuck in the time warp but everywhere else (ie big cities such as London) has changed and moved on.
Because it is convinient, not everyone has a local market situated nearby plus you can do all your shopping at one go.
its the convienience of it..
i go to the butchers/or cooked meat stall in the market...
personally, i feel that it is more convenient to buy the can stuff and toilet papers, all the blahs blahs blahs at the same place where i can buy the fresh meat and vegetables as well... all for the convenient sake!!!!!
taste wise........ not very much difference especially if u go to a high quality supermarket.
just cost a bit more to satisfy our laziness! woooooooo hoooo!
Unfortunately nowadays evrybody is in a rush and impatient!
Not many peopl want to park up and go to markets etc when they can go to supermarkets and get everything under one roof. Its the convenience of it ...you don't have to pay to park and you can get just about everything from toilet roll to televisions all in one go.
I agree with you and I love mooching around my local market, especially where you can see the products unwrapped and make sure it is a good piece of meat before you pay.
Alot of towns have out of town shopping centres/parks and big supermarkets now and I suppose people are just lazy and too busy to enjoy shopping around!
It's called convenience. Plus, not everyone knows where to find a butcher in town, if there is one. If you have small children to carry around with you, going to 2-3 places versus getting it all done in one stop makes no sense. Meat and veggies from grocery stores is fine, and it turns 3 stops, extra gas, more battling traffic, into one stop and then get home to put it away, and still have time to take kids to the park before dinner.
In my area we have an Asda and Teso that have opened very close togethger - as a result of this all the local butchers and fruit and veg shops have since closed, so I have no choice.
In our area it is much more expensive to go to the grocer or butcher, and you have to drive further. Our super markets have very good meat and fresh vegetables and fruits. I buy from the farm stands when we are out in the country. The taste is good, maybe because I have had training on how to choose and how to prepare the foods. Maybe the difference is supermarkets in other areas. I do have one I have selected while I am in MD and there are 2 in upstate NY, during the summer.
Our local butcher and greengrocer closed when the rents went up about a year ago, I have no choice, unless I travel to the nearest big town, and that ends up being more expensive with parking and fuel and is of course not an environmentally friendly activity
I haven't seen a proper greengrocers in years. These days it's all corner shops, and their produce is often far from fresh, and more expensive. I would love to get all my fresh fruit and veg from the market, but there are none close enough to me and I don't drive. I do have a butchers quite close to where I live and do buy meat from there occasionally, but I don't find them cheap at all, although I do admit the quality is better.
We are a faster moving society so whatever is quicker, easier and cheaper without consideration for quality is how it goes.....can you think what life was without cell phones, e-mail and faxes. You would have to call someone live on the phone. No answering machine and no call waiting or......mail a letter with a stamp
One stop shopping.
wow...with attitude like that, it's a shame you don't start your own market for those of us who don't have one nearby like myself. i would love to get my produce and other things like that fresh, but sometimes, it's just not plausible. don't come down on those people who can't get it or simply don't want it.
