Should I throw away clams that opened?!

Question:

Should I throw away clams that opened?

Someone told me that if my clams are opened I should throw them away. When I bought them, their shells were closed and they were still alive but I froze them. I took them out to use the next day and thawed them in the fridge. I'm not going to use them until today but I wanted to know if I should throw it out since it might be bad now?

Answers:
They are still probably alright. Live clams come open as a rule but will close up when handled. Any that don't close chuck out.
After cooking any that don't open chuck out.

From years of fishing, including collecting shell fish, from what you have said I would use them. if my nose told me they were alright. Believe me your nose will tell you if they were off, and if the cat turns up its nose you are right.

Some words of advice,

If in doubt,
Chuck 'em out.

Beware of smelly clams.

if they are open before cooking toss them out.

Throw them away if opened, buy the live ones the day you are going to use them, you can buy already frozen clams
