Why are certain foods designated as breakfast, lunch , and dinner foods?!

Question:

Why are certain foods designated as breakfast, lunch , and dinner foods?

I was just wondering...
Why do we think that certain foods should only be eaten at certain times of the day. Like, why don't we eat cereal, bacon, and pancakes for dinner? Why is steak always considered a dinner food (lol, except for steak egg and cheese bagels at McDonalds for breakfast) Just wondering if anyone knew the reasoning behind this.

Answers:
Back before food was mass produced, most of society was based on single family subsistence, meaning one household needed to provide 100% of their food. This really was the family farm of yore. So "daddy" would wake up early, milk 'ole
bessie and gather eggs from the old henhouse. When daddy was heading back to the farmhouse he would pop into the smoke house and grab a hunk of Arnold or Babe, (Who, by the way, did not give their life in vain). This is when "mother" would be baking the day's batches of biscuits and breads, along with churning the milk into the days butter. Bacon or ham, eggs, toast with fresh butter and a tall glass of milk - Sounds yummy! I'm getting hungry. Lunch and dinner were prepared with slight variations: Pork chops, pork roast or fried chicken instead of bacon or ham. The day's fruit and veggie harvest would provide a couple of side dishes. Iced tea that has been brewing all day makes a nice beverage. They usually added a sauce or a gravy for breakfast to add to the biscuits or to spice up the main meat for lunch or dinner. These developed into customs. Personally I think this way of thinking is out of date. Now we can have anything we want any time of the day. I love having "breakfast" for "dinner", or "lunch" occasionally as well as a nice steak for "breakfast".

Not in my house. I even eat dessert first sometimes!

Just tradition. Growing up, my mom occasionally served "breakfast foods" for dinner. In high school and college, I regularly ate last night's leftovers for breakfast.

As to where these traditions came from, I have no idea!

at my house we eat eggs for dinner chicken or steak for breakfast anything we are in the mood for we never label breakast and dinner foods so neither should restaraunts

I have no idea, i think it's just what people have been brought up as knowing what is "normal" to eat at certain times of the day. I have cereal for breakfast, quite a lot of the time i have it for lunch and again for dinner, at the moment anyway, i lurve cereal!!! Eat what you want when you want, it's just food after all =)

Technically any food can be eaten at any time of day but as long as you get your recommended daily allowances of vitamins etc.
As times have changed though I think it is becoming more and more blurred what is eaten when and what is seen as 'breakfast' food etc.
For example I live in the UK and I had never heard of someone eating 'coffee cake' for breakfast until I visited the US!
As everything moves towards a 24 hour society I think it will be a case of eat what you like and when you like.

Hmmmm that's actually a good question. I've wondered that myself & just came up with the idea that maybe we were just brainwashed into thinking that. LOL!

I've eaten a sandwich for breakfast before & my dad thought I was weird. I then I brought up the fact there is no rule anywhere that states we HAVE to have certain foods for certain meals. As long as it's food & we're getting what's needed daily then it's good enough. There are a lot of times I'll have leftovers from the night before as my breakfast or my mom has made traditional breakfast foods for dinner. HAHA.

I bet it has something to do with timing and tradition, like how people eat omelettes in the morning probably because that's when you gathered eggs and there's a long time to prepare for dinner so it's bigger meal with more elaborate dishes. In Germany, we ate sandwiches for breakfast with cheese and meat and really hearty bread so you have energy during the day, lunch is the biggest meal and dinner is more like a snack. I eat smoothies for breakfast now, snack lunches, and bigger dinners. I don't know, good question!

It's a conspiracy! It's just the man out to get us! LOL.

Actually, I think it's because of trends(70%)regional culture(15%) and traditions(15%). Spaniards, for example, actually eat pancakes at any point of the day, as opposed to having them just for breakfast, because for them it's more of a dessert. Conversely it wouldn't be strange to for a farm-boy to have a Steak for breakfast before he starts his 6am to noon shift.

Then you've got the good ol' breakfast burrito and in LA you can go to a place called Rosco's and have Chicken & Waffles. Technically, if you're in university I think you're licensed to have ramen noodles, beer or pizza for breakfast any day of the week.

It's mostly in our heads but if you live in the place where you grew chances are dinner food is dinner food because that's what everybody there eats for dinner. Now, if you'll pardon, it's time for my whale blubber stew and chocolate covered ant dessert.

Chow for now,

I think it's just because way back when, people figured the times for food according to how long they had to have to eat them. I eat breakfast sometimes for dinner and if you go to a 24hr. restaurant they'll still serve you breakfast/lunch/dinner at any time.
