Whats the difference between thaw and defrost?!

Question:

Whats the difference between thaw and defrost?

I think that defrost is to put a frozen food in the microwave and warm it up, and thaw is to get a frozen food unfrozen by letting it sit. What do you think?

Answers:
They are the same thing.

Both are to bring it out of a frozen state so they mean the same thing.

Thaw is when you unfreeze something when it was frozen all the way through. Defrost is when you rid a surface of ice.

If your referring to food, then there is no difference. However, often the word "defrost" is used in other contexts, such as when you refer to the "defrost" mode in your car.

You are correct and a pedant!

Defrost and thaw are the same thing. Mind you, in my mind I see "defrost" as something you do to the freezer section of a refrigerator and thawing is what you do with food. Either term refers to bringing something frozen to an unfrozen state.

actually, thaw is how people with a lisp say ¨saw¨ defrost is taking the icing off a cake after it has already been frosted.

i hope this helps!!

No difference.

Defrost is the more modern term, used since the advent of the electric freezer.
