Hidden sodium in foods?!

Question:

Hidden sodium in foods?

My OB has put me on a sodium restriction for swelling on top of the diabetic diet that was already on.
I know that there is "hidden" sodium in a lot of prepared foods such as canned vegetables and prepared meats. Is there any other types of foods that i should watch out for. I already cant eat junk food like chips and candy.
Thanks!

Answers:
ANY type processed meats like lunch meats, hot dogs, spam. Cheese, some spices that have salt added to them. They do make veggies in can that have no salt added. I prefer frozen veggies anyway, they are fresher. Any type of sauces liek spaghetti, alfredo, and etc...there are lots of things...mostly any foods that are prepared.
BTW I am also a diabetic w/ hypertension but I am very controlled over the last 4 years. Hope this helped

Just be sure to read the sodium content on the packaging, and you should be safe!

Im soory I dont have any info for you,but I am sorry to hear of the diabetes. PLEASE do as the doc says when dealing with it..Good Luck

Anything that is not bought fresh is a suspect for sodium, even soda pop, mustard, ketchup.
Good luck -it must be tough.

All fast foods! Subway contains a ton of sodium, just like most of the others, and a study showed that they were low-balling the sodium content as to what they'd listed. Also avoid chinese takeout and most asian dishes especially. Don't eat frozen meals, soups, or prepared salad dressings. Cheese can be bad as well. Your best bet is whole foods that you cook yourself, like eggs, fresh fruits and veggies, uncooked pasta, even make your own sauce from fresh tomatoes and olive oil and basil. Don't EVER use a seasoning packet, trust me.

Many canned foods do have a lot of sodium, however these days there are many canned veggie companies coming out with sodium free canned vegetables. (My father has severe hypertension and we have to watch his diet closely.)

Just read lables well. Sodium like sugar, can be hidden where you least expect it to be.

Hi I too an diabetic and you are right there is lots of hidden sodium in foods.

The best thing to do is read the labels of packages etc.
They will tell you how much sodium per serving.

I am sure your Doc has told you how many grams of sodium you can or should have per day.... If not you should ask him.

As fro meats - sausage hot dogs and the like are a NO NO they are loaded with salt.

Good luck with your diet....
