The old one was made before people knew about cholesterol and fats being bad for us. When this was discovered, it had to be changed because the old one included too much fat and cholesterol for us to be healthy if we followed it.

The food pyramids are influenced by lobbyists as much as nutritionists, especially beef growers. Do your own research about what's healthy - Ornish diet, Atkins diet, vegetarian diet, Mediterranean diet, etc, and make your own decision.

the new pyramid includes a website, mypyramid.org, where you can create an eating plan around you. It also includes a more balanced diet, and tells us to include exercise in our daily lifestyle.
