Why do metal food cans have ribs?!

Question:

Why do metal food cans have ribs?

Whether soups, chili, canned fruit/veggies, etc.

Answers:
Metal cans have ribs (called beads) to add structural strength allowing the overall plate to be thinner. This reduces cost of the can and lower weight means lower transportation costs.

When the can is heated to preserve the food and then cooled, a certain amount of vacuum is created. Without the beads, the can might buckle (called "panelling"). This doesn't usually harm the product, but it can crack the enamel on the inside walls of the can. It just looks like a dent, but is usually flatter and without sharp creasing.

So machines can grab them easier.

strength.........helps prevent crushing

The ribs give the can structural strength so they won't crush as easy during transport and such. Like a corrugated cardboard box or corrugated pipe.
