When can't you eat oysters?!

Question:

When can't you eat oysters?

i have just bought some oysters from a farm that has a tank in their back yard. i have bought them from them before but this time they didnt have the sign out. this time they are huge (4 or 5 times bigger than supermarket ones, i dont remember them being that bit last time) and when i open a couple of them one is pale greenish and nearly see through and another has bright green edges to it. are they ok to eat, they smell ok and they were in the water about 4 hours ago?

Answers:
They are O.K to eat. Try them with some tabasco or lemon and pepper. Yum.

Nothing wrong on it. I'm used to eat like those and its just good as they are.

When you are allergic and when you are pregnant.

If i remember rightly , with wild oysters you shouldn't eat them if there's an r in the month, with cultivated ones I'm not sure.

fresh water they are still good

The old saying is don't eat them in any month that doesn't have an "r" in it. That means May, June, July, and August. It's not an old wives tale. Those months are the months that oysters are reproducing, so they will be mushy and pale. They can be eaten, but it won't be GOOD eating.

Personally I wouldn't have anything to do with them, despite their reputation as an aphrodisiac. They're dodgy old things. Best kept for festivals like ones we have in Ireland where they are washed down with Guinness or champers. I don't think the festivals are as early as this - so check the web before you indulge!! Bon appetite!!
