How do you make your own yeast?!

Question:

How do you make your own yeast?

How do you make your own yeast from scratch? Not by using a dry or liquid yeast to make another kind of yeast. I am wanting a recipe for compressed yeast. Potatoes maybe a possible ingredient.

I'm gonna give it a shot myself!!

chicks can make it by not washing down there for a while. but it smells like it has all ready gone past its prime.

Buy some grapes, especially the ones that look like they have a white powder on them. Make a thin batter using flour and water. Take about 10 grapes (lightly washed) and drop them into the batter. Cover with a towel, and let sit for a couple of days, removing the grapes after about 12 hours. That's it.

You could probably do the same thing without the grapes. But there are many yeasts floating around in the air. It is possible to get a "bad" yeast in the batter. Adding the grapes makes nearly sure you'll get a good yeast starter.

I think your best bet to make your own yeast is to do a sourdough starter. The kind of yeast you are talking about, the store bought stuff, has been genetically modified for consistency.

As an alternative to purchasing yeast cultures, you can capture a wild yeast right in your own backyard. You may discover a delicious and wonderful sourdough unknown to the world! You may also discover a bland or distasteful one. Either way, give this a try because it is fun and will add a little adventure to your baking.
