How do you know if a whole watermelon is ripe enough before you buy it?
Answers:
When watermelons grow the bottom doesn't turn dark green because it is touching the ground and is not exposed to sunlight, it will go from a light green color to yellow, when it is yellow your watermelon will be ripe!
Smell it. It should smell like watermelon alot if it is ripe.
ripe one sound hollow when patted and are heavier than ones that arent ripe
Pick up watermelon. When ripe, you will be able to tell when it is ripe by how heavy it is. You can also look at the lines on it. You want them to be close together and not very wide.
If you are ever unsure. Traditional grocery stores such as Kroger, Dillon's, Fry's, Albertson's and Piggly-Wiggly (etc.) should be happy to cut a whole watermelon in half for you to check for ripeness, then wrap the halves for you to buy and then take home.
Discount grocers such as Wal-Mart, Aldi Sack-N-Save and Save-A-Lot usually don't offer such services, but it is always worth asking.
