Get a beter brand of popcorn. If using a kettle let the oil get hot before putting in the kernels. As soon as kernels start popping shake the kettle back and forth until poppinjg stops. Tried and true method.
Either the oil was not hot enought or the popcorn was too dry inside.
The moisture inside the popcorn is what makes it pop when it heats up.
Buy fresh popcorn and keep it in a sealable container so it doesn't dry out. Put 3 kernals in the oil... I usually use peanut oil, but regular vegetable oil works too. When they pop, add the rest... about 1/2 cup maximum. Too much and the popper does not return to high heat fast enough.
Try using peanut oil - it has a much higher smoke point - that is the temperature where the oil will begin to smoke and burn. Olive oil does not heat up enough to pop corn, before it smokes and flames and and canola is marginal.
Put peanut oil in the kettle along with 4 kernels and turn to high heat. Once those 4 pop, reduce heat to med-high, add the amount of corn you want to pop, re-cover the pan and shake continuously until popping slows to one every 2 to 3 seconds.
Turn out into a bowl and season
