Should you wash all fruit at once or only as you are about to prepare it?Why?!

Question:

Should you wash all fruit at once or only as you are about to prepare it?Why?

Answers:
I would wash it all straight away after ive bought it just incase there is anything a bit yuk on its skin. Could be a creepy crawly ready to worm its way into your apple or just somebody elses dirty hands on it from the super market. Best to get them clean first rather than letter the unwanted bits sink into the skin!

I was as I'm about to prepare it because of dirt and pesticides! I brought some grapes once and didn't bother washing until I saw my hands and they where black nearly threw up!

I dont think it would matter either way. some people would wash and prep all fruit and veg straight away just for convience. but it wouldnt matter either way.

soft fruit like berries should only be washed before you prepare them.(because they will get mushy) Other fruit I was right away - like apples, oranges and even grapes.

That is a personal preference. If it is going to intermingle with other things that you have in the fridge, yeah, wash it. Personally I wash everything when I get it so I don't have to do it later. I'm a tad lazy in that respect. Otherwise, you can do it either way with no real harm to you or it. Hope this helps!!!

In kitchens the chefs will wash before they use it.

Think of it like this . . . you wash it then put it in the refrigerator. Is your refrigerator spotlessly clean? Probably not. And as people reach in for things, don't they move other things out of the way? Probably yes.

You could err on the side of double caution--wash as soon as you bring it home and again before you use it but it is best to wash it before you use it and some fruits should not be washed until you're going to cook with them (lettuce, greens, strawberries).

My mum says we should wash it all at once and keep it in air tight container in the fridge.

But i put my fruits at room temperature thus i only wash it before i eat it.

Fruit needs washed because of the various pesticides and other chemicals used in the growing. Even organic fruit, as this can be grown in manure......

I alwasy wash fruit just before I use it. The reason being, I use a fruit bowl rather than stick them in the fridge (romm temperature fruit has a better flavour).

In doing this, however, flies can land on them - and you just dont know if the last place that fly landed was on dog poop or not!

Enjoy :)

Hey-

I have found, and been told, washing just before you use produce keeps it fresher. IF you happen to have a garden and have used pesticides of any kind, washing before storing in the fridge keeps from infiltrating to other items. I grow organically, so use a cold water spray on each plant before I harvest. If I buy from the store or farmer's market, I wash just before using.

I'd say wash it before you prepare it. If you do it all at once and then leave it, then bacteria and germs can build up on it again.

wash as u get it then wash again as u eat it better safe than sorry
