Why do so many pre-packaged foods have so much sodium in them?!

Question:

Why do so many pre-packaged foods have so much sodium in them?

Examples: Lean Cuisine and Cup-a-Soup

Answers:
Salt is a preservative and a great and cheap way to add flavor. The Lean Cuisines don't have fat to add the flavor, so they use tons of salt.
