Microwavable items?!
Microwavable items?
What are some types of items and containers that I should and should not put into a microwave without having them melt or
have anything else go wrong?
Answers:
Isn't containers have labels whether or not microwave safe?
never put anything metallic in a microwave, will start a fire
Its really funny to put Peeps in the microwave! They all expand and are just cool.
styleafoam / polystyrene tends to melt
Metal will spark and blow up the microwave (inc gold/metal leaf)
Glass / pyrex is good as id china. Some plastics are good but check on the packaging
none cook it in the freezer
Recently, research that has come out of John Hopkins states that plastic contains harmful chemicals that leech into foods at high temperatures. In particular, these chemicals have been shown to cause cancers, especially breast cancers.
Never use plastic in the microwave.
Paper seems to be OK, but since you don't know what's in it, glass bowls meant for the micro. are best. I do use paper, however, and don't worry about it, as I can't worry about everything, and feel safe enough with paper.
Also, freezing water bottles has been show to leech these chemicals (dioxins) into the water.
Don't leave bottles of water in a hot car for long and then drink them either! It can get hot enough in the car to do what the microwave does, especially over a long period of time.
I know it's a lot to consider, but our modern age, while providing us many benefits, has also been shown to be toxic, and why not take precautions when possible?
We get enough unavoidable chemicals unknowingly and
we should control what we can.
I use the microwave a little as possible anyway, because I prefer what an oven or pan does to food, like keeping it crispy when it's supposed to be, or slow cooking to give a dish more flavor. The microwave at our house is only used for quick re-heating, unless it's a bread or item with a crust/breading, etc.
unless it is labeled microwave safe never put plastic in the microwave certain chemicals can leech into your food same with polystyrene (foam cups) you also really shouldn't use paper plates because the coating can have the same chemicals. Also if glass dishes are not labeled Microwave safe don't use them because they may not be able to withstand the High temperatures generated by microwaves and can shatter in the microwave or as you are taking it out of the microwave causing severe burns. Never put metal in the microwave, including gold and silver edging on dishes any metal can spark and cause fire. Best bet look on the bottom of the dishes or on the packaging as you are buying them if it says microwave safe then you can use them if it doesn't then don't risk it.
not dogs
No styrofoam
No plastic
No metal
I would always use real glass containers to reheat in the microwave. Not glazed pottery and certainly not fine china that might have a metallic band on it for decoration. Most plates are safe but you should really check the back of the plate to be sure that it's microwavable as there are some dishes that are not safely microwavable. The best rule of thumb is what I said first. Glass. It's the safest bet. Good luck!!
You can't put GLASS in the microwave or metals.
microwavable pots and pans
Never use the plates that have facny stencils around the outer edge (usually gold or silver) it will generally damage the plate and create sparks. Try sticking to traditional plates, eventhough some plastic containers are "microwave safe", I personally feel they definitly would release some sort of chemicals.!
Just stay away from metal or cheap deli containers or old china and you will be fine
