Chefs or simply those knowlegeable in keeping food fresh longer...!!!?!

Question:

Chefs or simply those knowlegeable in keeping food fresh longer...!!!?

I seem to either be having problems keeping food as long as I'd like or am mistaken about how long they should stay fresh.

Any tips on keeping things like tomatos, green onions and cantaloupe fresh longer? Green onions seem to start to wilt within a few days in the fridge, I must throw out a few tom. a week and there's nothing worse than wasting a whole cantaloupe...ugh! :)

If anyone could offer some relevant tips, I'd REALLY appreciate having fresher food and not wasting any of it.

Yeah....I know...buy less....but that would require an extra trip to the grocery store ea. week, you know?

Cheers!

linens and things.

well i shop for myelf...and i used to have the same problem...especially melons..i now buy fruit trays ...they come with different melons and fruits...tomotoes ...i just buy 2 now and if u cant use it ...throw them in a sauce if it starts to go bad...and green onions...if u clean them up...and then just put them in some cool water...theyll last a couple days longer...i hope this helps you out.

I have vacuum seal containers in which i dice the canteloupe the day i buy it and put it in the containers...then i can vacuum seal it, open it, eat some, revacuum seal it, and store it...it keeps it fresh almost 3x as long...i got it as a gift so i couldn't tell you how much it costs...but i find that to be most useful

Sorry to tell you this but green onions just wilt, in the industry they have to come in with fresh every 3rd day. tomatos aren't to bad, if your fridge has a crisper section, but it down there, and keep it away from your avacados and apples (they give off a chemical that ripens other fruits and veggies really fast) Cantaloupe you can cut up and keep in air tight container. Sadly part of having fresh ingredients is going to the grocery store alot!

There is no easier answer.
I go daily, but a cabbage, cauliflower and lettuce will last for at least a week in a plastic bag.
Wrap celery in tin foil, keep the carrots in the plastic bag they come in
Keep in the crisper drawers.

Hope this helps.
