Why are they called animal crackers if they're really cookies?!

Question:

Why are they called animal crackers if they're really cookies?

My husband asked me that last night while giving a few to our son. I've been wondering the same thing since I was a kid. My theory is maybe they were more like crackers when they first came out. What do you think?

Answers:
they arnt cookies. they are crackers made form sweet dough. The reason they are crackers is because they are made in layers like a cracker is made. the sweet dough gives them the taste and consistency of a cookie

i think its because crackers sound better and more exciting than cookies lol

You could be correct, or maybe it is because they are textured more like a cracker, instead of a cookie.

=]

BECAUSE THEY JUST ARE!!!!!!!!JK LOL!! I dont know.

years ago all cookies were called crackers

maybe because they look like resemble animals and look like crackers not cookies

I would guess it is the same reason we drive on a parkway and park on a driveway. Sometimes you wonder who came up with some of the names for things like this.

because when they were first made they were crackers.....and they have evolved into cookies..the name just stuck

because they are in the shapes on animals.

they explained this on the food networks "unwrapped" but I so forgot what they said.

Ok I think I found out. They are called crackers because they are not sweet enough to be a cookie....its more like a biscuit.

Animal Crackers being mildly sweet, are an exception to the rule-of-thumb "crackers are salty/savory; cookies are sweet." However, the manner in which animal crackers are made (layered dough) classifies them as crackers.

The manufactures did it to frustrate you as you ponder the nature of the universe of marketing. children love them and don't ask why.
