How do you tell if popular fruits are ripe?
The only thing know is that yellow or red apples are ripe, and even if you buy green bananas they will ripen to yellow and finally black in a couple of weeks. I can pretty much figure out grapes, strawberries, and tomatoes.
But sometimes I'd like to buy nectarines, pears, avocadoes, oranges, cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon, pineapples, and other fruits and I don't really know how to tell if they're ripe or not and what will happen to them when I get them home? If a pear or nectarine is hard, is that good to eat?

The nectarines I bought today, after taking your advice, were sour and hard inside.

Nectarines are ready to eat when you you gently squeeze them and they give slightly under the pressure of your fingers. Pears and avocados are the same. Pears will slightly turn yellow and avocados will start to turn black. To me the best pears for eating are Bartlett and Anjou. Oranges have to reach a certain percentage of sugar before they are allowed to be packed, whether they are from California or Florida. Cantaloupe will be slightly yellow, but a dead give away for ripeness is the smell. Right now lopes coming out of northern Florida and soon from Georgia are absolutely great. Honeydews will also change colors. When the outside is a whitish green it should be ready, also smell for that sweet aroma. The best way I know to tell you about watermelons is to hold it up in you arm and thump the side of the melon. If you hear a dull, deep tone the watermelon is probably ripe. If the tone is high pitched put it down, most likely will be immature. Also look for a yellow belly on the melon. The best pineapple on the market today is the golden ripe. Whether they are an amber color or slightly green they are ready for eating. Most of the time the smell will send you into orbit, if you love pineapple.
Hope this information help you. Good Luck!!!!

hmmmm well nectarines, peaches i like to buy the ones that have more red in them. I dont eat pears but avocados need to be a little on the soft side when u squeeze them, dont eat oranges, cantaloupe, honeydew. but watermelon o yeah just thump it....a nectarine is suppose to be hard ....
At the Wal-mart I used to shop at, they tell you right on the sign above the fruit. It tells you what color and texture mean that its good to eat.
tap melons and smell it to tell if it's ripe
and give the other ones like nectarines a light sqeeze and a smell to see if they're ripe.
I didn't know you liked to eat anything besides apples.
cantaloupe and honeydew you can smell and the sweeter they smell the riper they are. avocadoes get softer the more ripe they are so if they're really tough when you press your thumb on them then they'll take a few more days to ripen. pineapples, you can tell are ripe when you pull on the center leaves. the ones with the loose leaves in the center are the ripest. also, the most ripe ones are more fragrant like the cantaloupe and honeydew, i believe.
