What kind of luck do I have with Pyrex?!

Question:

What kind of luck do I have with Pyrex?

I have used (and abused) Pyrex for years due to their versatility and sturdiness.

A month ago, I put a 13x9 dish on the grill and it shattered.

I know, you aren't supposed to do that. I've done it in the past with no consequence.

My replacement dish, I baked pork chops in tonight. I set the dish on top of the stove, due to lack of counter space. The burners were not on, but warm from the oven.

That also shattered!

Who on earth breaks Pyrex?!

Sally,

You are absolutely correct.

Pyrex sent me a replacement and it had a tiny chip in it. So while the dish was not exposed to extreme temps, the glass was compromised!

Sometimes, everything happens in one day. This might make you feel better. All this happened to me yesterday!!!-----
1. I cut my right pinkie finger with scissors.
2. I scorched the bottom of the pot with beans in it.
3. I then took the pot off the burner and set it down on the knobs on the stove, and they stuck to the bottom of the pot.
4. I was hanging some artwork on a screen I use for a room divider, and it all toppled over. Fortunately, I caught the lamp before it broke.
5. Medicare is not paying for my husband's medicine any more (we just out and he is a diabetic).
My sister's e-mail got sent to Spam.
6. My necklace broke right before going out the door to my circle meeting.
7. I hit my leg on the edge of my friend's car door when I was getting into it last night.

All this ought to make you feel better. Yesterday was a golly bum day, but today was better.

Pyrex is tempered glass and not supposed to shatter but it will if it's heated up or cooled down too fast.

i guess you do! i just bought a good set at bed bath and beyond on clearance (21 pieces for $17.00), and i'm glad you posted this, so i'll know not to do that....good lookin' out.

Pyrex is not unbreakable. It can be sensitive to sudden temperature changes, especially if it has been chipped or scratched. Putting it through extreme temperature changes over and over again through time can also weaken the glass, this is probably why your first dish shattered when you put it on the grill.

The second dish, I'm not so sure...did you have the dish in the fridge before baking in it? You should probably have a rack under the dish to allow it to cool evenly.

I would guess that your replacement dish may have had a manufacturing flaw in it that caused the breakage.

Cold water will destroy your Pyrex if you don't let them cool off before you put stuff inside them.I have tons of old Pyrex dishes that I purchased on eBay ;they never break because they are vintage.I even have a Pyrex Coffee pot from the 60/70s .It is a great glass coffee pot with a glass handle too;it is so cute. The best way to keep your Pyrex dishes is to make sure that they are cool before you use water on them.;they will break of you put cold water even near them; after you take them out ot the oven.Don't put them on an open fire either.
God bless I hope that I was able to help you hold on to your Pyrex dishes
