Where is the best place to store potatoes?!
Where is the best place to store potatoes?
My boyfriend and i disagree. I think they should be stored somewhere cool and dark but he says out in the light is better.
Whichever way i chose they sprout really quickly and go to waste. Any suggestions on how they will keep longer would be appreciated. Thanks.
Answers:
Step One
Avoid rinsing potatoes before storing.
Step Two
Place potatoes in a brown paper, burlap or plastic bag with holes in it.
Step Three
Store in a cool, dark, dry place. A root cellar, if you have one, is the best storage option.
Step Four
Make sure the temperature in the area is about 45 to 50 degrees F. Don't store potatoes in the refrigerator, or they will become too sweet.
Step Five
Avoid storing potatoes with onions because, when close together, they produce gases that spoil both.
Step Six
Store potatoes no longer than two months if mature. If they are new, store no longer than one week.
Step Seven
Check on them occasionally and remove those that have become soft or shriveled, as well as those that have sprouted.
Tips & Warnings
* Potatoes sprout as a result of exposure to light or warm temperatures.
* Avoid freezing uncooked potatoes.
* Sweet potatoes, although they appear similar to other potatoes, are actually much more delicate. Store sweet potatoes for a maximum of one week.

Cool, dark and dry. However some modern types are not bred for storage. Check before buy to get the best results.
If stored in the light and in too warm a place they will go green and that is poisonous!
Obviously they are too warm if they are sprouting and perhaps kept too long! - buy smaller quantities
You should keep them in a dark ,cool place preferably not in plastic packaging as that will make them sweat and sprout!
Brown thick paper sack would be ideal
There is nothing wrong with keeping them in the fridge in the chiller compartment!
I would suggest you store them in a Potato store. Its for the best.
cool and dark, like a laundry room in a wire basket so air can circulate ~ I have prepared food in a child care setting for 15 years and I used to purchase 50 lbs. or potatoes at a time, it took a while to work through that bag and I've tried storage in many ways to extend the life of the potato, heat and light will cause them to sprout faster....
You are right dark & cool.
The best way to store potatos is to keep it in a dry cool with some light but not directly under powerfull light like the sun fresh potatos should never be left for more than 30 days otherwise they loose their moist and might get rwind.
bottom of the freg in the draw will keep them fresher and longer
YOU are right pet, cool, dark and airy. Light will cause them to go green, warm will encourage rotting, damp will make them sprout. It's the time of year now for potatoes to sprout. Any 'Main crop' - eg not 'new' potato around now will be last years, New are in the shops right now, main crop varieties start from about mid-to late august.
You're right. Or even better store them in the ground, then you'll get more potatoes and can dig them up fresh to eat!
potatoes bags (sack) i leave it outside if weather is cold.
somewhere dark and cool. I've also heard that if you store a couple of apples with them then they take longer to sprout and so keep longer!
i keep mine in a dark cupboard so they don't sprout quickly
