Whats the difference between a stew and a casserole?


Answers:
I always considered stew to be in the "soup family" while casserole was more of a solid that has layers you cut up into slices (similar to lasagna). Ok, I got the the def. on the net

Stew:
a. A dish cooked by stewing, especially a mixture of meat or fish and vegetables with stock.
b. A mixture likened to this dish

Casserole:
a. A dish, usually of earthenware, glass, or cast iron, in which food is both baked and served.
b. Food prepared and served in such a dish

So apparently the difference is that casserole MUST be served in a dish otherwise it is not a legal (proper, orderly, real) casserole. But a stew does not have to be served in a dish. Heck, it can be served in a milk bucket, or, if you're brave you could try spooning scalding hot stew into a napkin. Hope I helped =]

there isnt a difference..its the same thing...just some call it a stew & some a casserole...they are both cooked in the oven - and cooked slowly.
