Is a tomato a fruit or vegetable?!
Is a tomato a fruit or vegetable?
Answers:
A Tomato Is A Fruit.
It's a fruit.
Actually a tomato is a berry.
My friend asked this before when he had the answer. To make it simple, those with seeds are fruits, those without are vegetables. Therefore a tomato is a fruit
Seedless grapes does not count as a veg as it does have seeds.
The same question it's been asked when it comes to avocados...people say its a fruit.
Here is some information I found on the net...
In 1893 , the Supreme Court ruled that the tomato must be considered a vegetable, even though, botanically, it is a fruit. Because vegetables and fruits were subject to different import duties, it was necessary to define it as one or the other. So, tomatoes were declared to be a vegetable given that it was commonly eaten as one. (Source: The Packer, 6/9/90)
It's classified as a fruit - but who really knows ???
In scientific terms, a tomato is a true fruit.
However, with its use in cooking, it is often called a vegetable.
A vegetable is part of the plant, a leaf or a root, or the plant itself. A fruit is a product of the plant. A fruit has seeds. therefor a tomato is a fruit. In 1893 allot of fruits such-as cucumbers, zucchini and tomatoes were considered produce other than fruit to escape import and export taxes, but scientifically a tomato is in the fruit family.
Someone earlier said 'those with seeds are fruits,'
I'm not agreeing or disagreeing, but are you saying that the following foods are fruit?
Bell Pepper
Squash
Cucumber
Jalepeno (actually, all peppers)
avacado
Corn
Green beans (most beans, actually)
Peas
okra
Again, i'm not saying these are one thing or another. As far as I know, though, they are all vegetables and all contain seeds.
That being said, on many many occasions, I have heard that a tomato IS indeed a fruit...
It is vegetable which can be eaten raw or cooked.
The confusion about 'fruit' and 'vegetable' arises because of the differences in usage between scientists and cooks. Scientifically speaking, a tomato is definitely a fruit. True fruits are developed from the ovary in the base of the flower, and contain the seeds of the plant (though cultivated forms may be seedless). Some plants have a soft part which supports the seeds and is also called a 'fruit', though it is not developed from the ovary: the strawberry is an example. As far as cooking is concerned, some things which are strictly fruits may be called 'vegetables' because they are used in savoury rather than sweet cooking. The tomato, though technically a fruit, is often used as a vegetable, and a bean pod is also technically a fruit. The term 'vegetable' is more generally used of other edible parts of plants, such as cabbage leaves, celery stalks, and potato tubers, which are not strictly the fruit of the plant from which they come. Occasionally the term 'fruit' may be used to refer to a part of a plant which is not a fruit, but which is used in sweet cooking: rhubarb, for example. So a tomato is the fruit of the tomato plant, but can be used as a vegetable in cooking.
i think its a fruit.. a lot of ppl say its a fruit but im not tooo sure.. i think its a fruit
TOMATO IS A FRUIT, ALTHOUGH WE USE IT AS A VEGETABLE
tomatoes is actually fruits, not vegetables that we always said...
it's a vegetable.
i learn in my food and nutrients lesson.
I happen to think a tomato is a vegetable, but in actuality it is a fruit. Fruits have natural sugars. My mother's doctor told her to limit her consumption of tomatoes because it raises her blood-sugar level.
both i think
