Why must lobsters be live to cook them?!

Question:

Why must lobsters be live to cook them?

Answers:
They don't. You just see them that way in restaurants becuase it's the easiest way to keep them fresh. They go bad pretty soon after they die, so you really can't keep them around for too long.

if you kill them any other way i think it would hurt the quality of the food

They dont have to be alive, they just do that in most places to keep them fresher longer.

Lobsters, like many shellfish, go bad very quickly when dead--this is why you cook them while alive. Same goes for mussles and oysters. Food poisoning from shellfish can be pretty nasty.

Freshness, my love, Freshness!

Fear tastes good.

I don't know for sure, but how exactly would you plan on killing them otherwise? They have an exoskeleton. It seems like you'd have to ruin what you want to eat just to kill it so that you can eat it.

You have to cook them live otherwise you can get sick because they start to decompose very quickle same with all shellfish. Just like clams, mussels or oysters. If their shells are open before cooking or are still closed after they are cooked you have to discard them because theyre dead and no good to eat. Lobsters who are alive and are not moving very much are called "Sleepers" and must be cooked right away because once they die they should be discarded.

Because they spoil quickly - so they're always sold live (unless frozen or already cooked/prepared). Of course, if you wanted to, you could try and kill it just before the drop into the boiling water, but you'd have to locate the brain and stick a knife into it through the shell. They don't like that much better than being dropped in boiling water.

so you can watch the life sucked out of them... lol... i dunno!!!

its always fresh baby nobody wants a frozen *** lobster u don't know how long that crap been sitting around and they are so expensive why not do fresh....

If you put them in a container in the fridge overnight they will become comatose, so throw them in the pot of boiling water.
This is a more humane way of killing them than throwing them in and hearing them trying to get out.
The other way is to cut them at the back of the head.
