Stinky tilapia?!

Question:

Stinky tilapia?

I bought some fresh tilapia filets last week from the butcher, and immediately put them in the freezer. I just took them out to thaw for tonight's dinner and I noticed they smell a little fishy, which they shouldn't. Do you think they are ok? I am a little skeeved out. They are SUPER fishy, but usually they don't smell at all.

Answers:
When I buy frozen tilapia then cook it, usually mine smells fishy. So I think it is normal.

toss them.

you shouldn't be able to smell it at all if it truly was fresh. a little maybe, but if you have to question your fish because it does smell, get rid of it. don't even question it.

Fish that is truly fresh should not smell fishy. Even though you bought it fresh, you really have no idea how long it was at the butcher shop. It could have been the last day before it turned bad.

I have even bought frozen fish before that smelled fishy when it thawed....it turned out really mushy and yucky. I doubt I would trust it.

I'm not an expert on fish, but I would suggest that you cook one and see if it still smells bad. If it does, then I would take the rest back to the butcher and ask if they will give you a refund.

If it was cleaned thoroughly, it should not smell fishy.

For future reference and freezing: wash the fish in very cold ice water, seal in bags with ice water for freezing

Put the fish in a ziplock bag with some milk and a little salt. Let it stand in refrig for an hour or so. That should knock out the smell.

Ed note: If it still smells... toss it.

If you have rinsed it and it still smells fishy then its on its way to being bad.
fish ,fresh or frozen, should Never smell fish but more like water..sea or fresh.

Fish should not stink. Throw it out! YUCK!

Hope you didn't eat it. It's not good--bring it back where you bought it! bettyk

Fish that smells bad is not fresh, and should not be eaten. Fish that has no stench is best. Also look at the eyes,( if you are buying it with the head still attached). Red eyes=bad fish. Clear eyes=good fish.
