What's the deal with lettuce packaging?!

Question:

What's the deal with lettuce packaging?

It's always confused me with how lettuce is packaged. It seems an airtight bag is wrapped around the head, then strong tape is used to secure it, so if you want to open a head of lettuce, you need to tear it out, ruining the bag, and then you need to get another bag to put what's left in it, since you ususally only use a leaf or two at a time unless you're making salad or sandwiches for a lot of people. So, why isn't lettuce packaged more like bread, in a bag with a twist-tie that's resusable? Why is lettuce packaged so you have to destroy the package to open it?

Answers:
Actually lettuce is package in a single piece of plastic bigger than the head of lettuse. It is pulled over the core and heat sealed. That keeps it some what fresh in a store. Once you get it home and use it once if you are like me,I take the core out remove the outer leaves rinse it and break it into smaller pieces and put it either it a lettuce keeper or a air tight bowl. Keeps longer and easier to use when needed.

i no wat u mean. i get really aggravated with that.

So you only use a few leaves OK
I have a similar concern, If I buy a head, I slice it in half rebag it,
slice off a 1/6 for my salad.
than a few leaves for sandwichs
By that time most of the letus is wilted OK
why can't we buy 1/2 a head.
Years ago I used to buy 10Lbs of potatoes get to the check out and ask anyone if they would like 5 lbs free
Because I paid less for 10 than I did for 5 and I made someone happy.
