Question:

When you buy a knife set, how do you know what knife is for what?

I bought a knife set in the butcher block, and I really don't know which knife is for what. There are no instructions, and I'm clueless.


Answers:
The smaller ones are probably steak knives. The big one with the pointy tip is probably for carving, the similarly big one with the blunt tip is probably a bread knife. I know what you mean though. My general plan is, if the one I pick up is cutting whatever it is I'm trying to cut, it's good.

I just use which ever knife that serves my purpose best.

The really big knife is a chef knife and that's used for cutting up stuff, like vegetables. (Make sure you know how to use a knife correctly.) The long narrow knife is a carving knife. No explanation needed. Then probably you have a small knife that is a paring knife. This is knife is used at the tip mostly. You probably have a serated knife for breads, and possibly some steak knives. Some knife sets now have a santoku knife, where they cut similar to a chef's knife but have these ridges on the side. Go to the website of the knife set you have and it'll probably give you an explanation of every knife you have. Better knives have to be washed by hands, so read the instructions before throwing them in the dishwasher.
