From Wikipedia...
The word "Hamburger" comes from Hamburg, Germany; the inhabitants of this city are also known as "Hamburger" in German but as Hamburgians in English. In Germany, local traditional snacks are often named after the place of origin, like the Frankfurter (also known as a hotdog), the Berliner (a type of doughnut) or (Thüringer) Bratwurst. In Hamburg it was common to put a piece of roast pork into a roll, called Rundstück warm, although this is missing the "essence" of the modern hamburger, which is ground meat. However, another theory states that in Hamburg, meatscraps similar to modern ground beef were served on a Br?tchen,[2] a round bun-shaped piece of bread. It is said that German immigrants then took the Hamburger to the United States.[2]
The word hamburger comes from Hamburg, Germany. It is tradition in Germany for snacks to be named after it's location of origin. (For example the frnakfurter.) The hamburger started as meatscraps similar to ground beef being served in a bun.
they say the hamburger started in Hamburg , Germany.
Just like the Earl of Sandwich invented the sandwich.
Everyone got it wrong so far. The guy who invented the hamburger was living in America running a small restaurant. He wanted a quick, convenient way to give customers food. He came up with grilled ground beef (ground beef cooks faster) between two slices of bread (for easy portability). It was an instant success.
He gave it the name of his family's home in Germany, Hamburg. The rest is history.
