How much does saffron cost?!

Question:

How much does saffron cost?

I recently bought some Spanish saffron, 0141 oz. (.4g) and it seemed very cheap. I paid $1.89 for it. Was this a grocery store error or does that little amount really cost what I paid? I've been wanting to make tandoori chicken but the saffron was always too expensive. If this was a good deal, then I'm going to go back to the store to get some more!

Willa, it says superior saffron on the package. Does that make a difference?

Come to think of it, I might have been wanting to make paella, not tandoori chicken! LOL It's been so long, I can't remember!

That's about right. Saffron usually goes for about $50 per ounce (28.35 grams per ounce = $1.76 per gram) and the higher quality saffron can reach $150 per ounce. On the list of most expensive spices, saffron is first with vanilla and cardamom coming in at second and third, respectively.

It's not cheap! Here is a link.

A good source of high quality saffron must first be established. There are many lower grades on the market that combine the stamen part of the flower for added weight. Pure saffron is the stigma of the crocus flower (red only).

this is why your saffron was so cheap. you also don't want to buy it at a regular grocery store. because it's not bought often, it has been sitting in a wharehouse, and then the store for who knows how long. if you want the good stuff, go to a high quality store, and pay the money. i got lucky, my dh had to stop in spain on his way back from afghanistan, and he picked me up three 1.5g jars for pennies compared to what we'd pay in US.

You sure got the good bargain. Usually saffron is sold around 2 dollars per gram. Any way tandoori chicken has no saffron no matter how cheap you get it. You use red food colour if you want or use few kashmiri chillies for colour.
