Do poppy seeds contain opium?!

Question:

Do poppy seeds contain opium?

Answers:
yes. i work as an addiction counsellor. we get free stuff from starbucks to give to our clients. they have to come up with a clean urine screen every week. any thing with poppy seeds in it we throw out cause they will test postive for opiates

yep, you can fail a drug test if you eat them before

opium is more refined, but the seeds contain small amounts of precursors.... enough to cause a false positive on a drug test, so if you are in a job that requires drug tests, NO poppyseed muffins!!! or you might end up pretty embarrassed.

Yes, but not enough to make you feel anything -- if you eat enough a drug test can come out dirty though.

"Opium" refers to a specific product produced by the poppy flower.

Poppy seeds contain trace amounts of "opiates," the chemicals containted in opium.

It wouldn't be accurate to say that poppy seeds contain opium, but it would be accurate to say that both they and opium contain opiates.

Hope this helps!

poppy seeds are the base product for making opium so do not est them before a drug test or you will fail.

all poppy seeds contain some form of morphine ( from Morpheus God of sleep)..opium is just another name for it..but there is one type of poppy that gives plentiful of supply of opium..these are the very pretty ones..which grow readily in Mexico.and southern states of America..(papava semniferum)Opium Poppy, is also grown in Afghanistan

For those who are giving thumbs down to the answers about failing a drug test.. it's true. Though one muffin or bagel won't fail, but numerous ones will. It was proven on that show Myth Busters.
