Tastes kinda like slightly fishy salty Greek olives. When served traditionally in a fancy restaurant they come served in their container packed on ice with mother-of-pearl or plastic spoon, chopped hard boiled egg whites and yolks, separately, chopped capers, minced raw onions and toast points.
Or with Russian Blinis - buckwheat pancakes, Crème Fraiche and caviar.
are served with And iced premium Vodka, of course!

i tried it once...they used it as some kind of deco on a steak i ordered. i don't remember them having any taste at all but i definitely don't like the look ;p

They look like little blueberries (usually, orange blueberries). They don't really have a taste.

As with most foods, there are different varieties, ranges in quality, and you get what you pay for.
At the risk of gross generalization, I would describe caviar as both fishy and salty. If you don't like fish or sushi, you might be disappointed. It kind of reminds me of eating raw oysters--you can taste the freshness of the sea.
My favorite experience with caviar was at a party at which the host's Japanese girlfriend made spaghetti with caviar. It was amazing, but then again it was a pretty interesting party--mostly African American screen writers and Japanese girls from the local beauty college. I felt very white and pedestrian but had a great time.
I've also had caviar-topped hors d'oeurves that were pretty stellar. The one negative experience I had was with discount caviar that was past it's prime. I didn't get sick or anything, but it lacked that bright seafood freshness that make caviar so good.
