How does corn get turned into popcorn?!


Question:

How does corn get turned into popcorn?

How is this process done? This question has been bugging my husband for weeks now, so any insight would be great.


Answers:
Regular popcorn is not the same as the corn you are thinking.

Popcorn is grown differently. Its a whole different species of corn. It's just the way it grows.

It was grown in the early days as a treat, because when it was heated the insides would expand and explode, creating the while fluff that you are familiar with.

There is no process of making corn into pop corn. Just a different type.

corn is dried into maze. the kernels are then picked off the cob and with heat the kernels have a enzyme inside when heat makes it expand and pop out the. it is like when you put a hot dog in a microwave too long.

It doesn't. Corn is just that, corn. but popcorn is from a completly different plant.

There's a small amount of water inside the kernal. When heat is applied, the water turns into steam and expands... it acts as an explosion and thus... "blow's up" into the fluffy popcorn...

Popcorn is a corn unto itself. In other words, not all corn can become popcorn. I'm in the Midwest, believe me there is a difference in the fields.
Popcorn gets very hard and dry as to the kernel. However there is just enough deep moisture that when heated causes the kernel to POP!

As noted popcorns are specific varieties of corn. The hull is very hard.
The corn is grown and dried to a specific moisture content.
When heated, the water turns to steam and builds up enough pressure to explode the tough hull.
Other varieties of corn would just kind of puff up a bit, if they changed at all.
