Why is it that raisins cost less than grapes when they are actually grapes?!

Question:

Why is it that raisins cost less than grapes when they are actually grapes?

especially when raisins and figs of the like are being worked on more , like drying and processing and packing etc. doesn't all that extra resources and work loabour make it more expensive than the grapes that are natural? someone please enlighten me on this.

Answers:
They're a different cheaper variety of grape that require MUCH less labor and care. They can be machine processed; grapes are done by many many hands.
Raisins are grown, picked, usually sulfured to present a better looking product, left in the sun and packaged.
.

gotta lotta time on your hands do you?

Possibly because fresh grapes need to be delivered quickly while "bad" grapes can go into raison processing.

beacuse they're not as perishable. they have a significantly longer shelf life. they also don't need the precautions of delicate care in shipping and packing.

Grapes have to be shipped relatively quickly and kept at proper temperature and still have a limited shelf life. Raisins can be stored a long time at a wide temperature range. You pay extra for the refrigeration and the heating in winter and for the rapid transport.

It's probably because fresh grapes are highly perishable and have a much sooner expiration date that dried fruit. Yes it costs more to dry them, but once they are preserved they can stay on the shelf for quite a while before they go bad. However, nobody wants to buy old or mushy grapes (I know this, being a cashier =] )
