What can I serve with cabbage rolls?!

Question:

What can I serve with cabbage rolls?

I'm cooking Swedish Cabbage Rolls on Friday night for my sister in law's boyfriend who is English. As this is his first time in Sweden, I wanted to cook some Swedish food.

I am looking for serving suggestions.

The Cabbage Rolls are reasonably large and are stuffed with mince (ground beef) and rice or barley.

I will have Lingonberry Sauce/Jam with them but I don't really want to go as traditional as just serving boiled potato with them.

I have sort of some sort of rice dish or maybe pasta, ... and not really know if I should serve them with more vegetables or not... and what vegetables to use.

Whenever we had cabbage rolls, we just served it with a nice crusty loaf of bread with butter. The cabbage rolls contain everything you need, veg, protein and starch. Maybe you could serve a traditional appetizer or first course using potatoes, these are not the boiled potatoes that you were talking about:

Janssons Frestelse (Jansson's Temptation)

6 to 8 potatoes 2 onions 2 to 3 tablespoons margarine or butter 1 to 2 cans anchovy fillets 2? to 3 dl (1 1/4 to 1? cups) light cream
Peel the potatoes, cut in thin sticks. Slice the onions. Sauté the onion lightly in some of the margarine or butter. Drain the anchovies and cut in pieces. Put the potatoes, onion and anchovies in layers in buttered baking dish. The first and last layer should be potatoes. Dot with margarine or butter on top. Pour in a little of the liquid from the anchovies and half of the cream. Bake in a 200 C oven for about 20 minutes. Pour in the remaning cream and bake for another 30 minutes or till the potatoes are tender. Serve as a first course or supper dish.

you can do a oolong noodle and veggie dish like a stir fry with them or maybe some steamed dumplings.

Potato Salad

go get some corn beef at the grocery store! very popular with cabbage and serve it with potaoes.

BEANO! Not more rice. Garlic bread goes good with it and a jello fruit salad.

corn & potato's on the side.ice tea

No noodles or more rice. You can serve cumin potatoes (peeled & boild) or you can serve dumplings with the cabbage rolls along with a gravy. serve a vegetable chicken soup before the main dish.
