Can you cure meat with a brine solution in a food grade plastic barrel?!

Can you cure meat with a brine solution in a food grade plastic barrel?

I know the books say to use a oak barrel or a large crockery vat but availability and expense force me to look for an alternative.

Heavy grade plastic is fine. I have a bucket kept especially to brine the Christmas Turkey in. Never had any problems.
