They are taking the p, surely?!
They are taking the p, surely?
Since I was alerted to the supermarket trick of packaging two nice pork chops with the third full of fat hidden under the label, I've found the same dirty trick played with three large flat mushrooms and a small fourth under the label and today, four muffins, three proper size and a little one hidden by the label. This practice seems to be widespread but you don;t realise it until you are home. Not any more- I'm ripping off the labels from now on and callng the manager for an explanation.

If you can, buy your meat from an independent butcher (not Dewhursts - all their meat is packaged). If you can inspect the meat, then you will get quality.
It is an urban myth that Butchers meat is more expensive than that from a Supermarket. Here are prices from the butcher that supplies me (these are not trade prices - these are prices charged to hom e cooks)
Chuck steak - for stews £2.11 per lb
Minced beef - lean with no gristle £1.60 lb
Free range chicken breasts, with fillet attached £1.24 each (one is enough for an individual serving)
Pork Sausages - £0.27 each - they do not split, expode or shrink when grilled/broiled.
Local butchers often will deliver meat, within a 3 or 5 mile radius. So if your local butcher is not within walking distance, use a taxi to get there and examine the meat, and buy on the spot if you like the look of it. Do the same for your next two batches, by then the butcher will have you marked down as a discerning potential regular. After that, get him to deliver - the initial excess expenditure will soon be repaid by the higher quality and cheaper meat you will get. Buy in bulk and freeze the meat - you may get a discount as well.
And, if you buy duck, buy Gressingham Duck - magnifique!

Oh that made me laugh.
go you girl power!
Go girl!!
Woe betide the Manager!
I'd love to be there when you do!
Wow, that's terrible! I'm going to have to start checking!
Another reason not to use suppermarkets or if you have too hand pick.
lol
hmm I will be checking too from now on.
this could cause super market rage..
just remember, its only a mushroom...try to remain calm
Good for you, but I wouldn't mind a fatty pork chop. Fat=flavor.
Good for you!!
Today I found the mushroom trick in the Co-op. But as you say, only after I got home.
Tomorrow I shall be ripping labels left, right, and centre.
COOL hun you go for it...........I bought a mellon with a dirty great hole in it, you can imagine what was concealing that hole can't you!
And it was nice to be there at the pivotal point in history when the 'Anti-Rip off Revolution' started...
I am going to do the same.
Another reason to use the local 'Farm down the lane' for locally produced goods!
Shop at Asda, they are by far the best. Even if you do get stitched like that you probably pay 2/3 of the price elsewhere anyway!
Definately write to managers and head offices though. I have done this several times for the most minor of things (last ones were security tags being left on clothing items -and causing me great inconvenience to have to return to the store). Last time i got a £10 Jane Norman vouchers and £20 form Republic!! I also know a girl who wrote to Nestle as her Kit Kat has no wafer in 1 bar, only chocolate and she was sent a whole box of 48 Kit Kats!!
good for you and a "resolvement" for your trouble...you pay for what you are shown to expect
paranoia will annoy ya
Lets hope this doesn't materialise into something obsessional ,like checking out mens label covered bits . OBVIOUSLY SIZE MATTERS TO YOU .
Nothing new in that! It's been going on all my life & probably for thousands of years!
Go for it !
Yes yes, it's like when you buy a bag of kettle chips and you open it and its 80% air.
You are so right! And you know what else you should do? Leave them with the packaging and get them to recycle it! They overpackage things too much these days and that's why the prices are so high. Ask for a discount while you're at it too!
