Can I eat oysters if I have had food poisoning off them?!

Question:

Can I eat oysters if I have had food poisoning off them?

I've heard that once I've had food poisoning from oysters, I can't eat them again. Is that true?

Answers:
Food poisoning comes from bacteria on the food, due to improper preparation, storage, etc. I don't think that you can get food poisoning from a properly prepared food, even if you have food poisoning due the the same food, prepared improperly. Just make sure it isn't an allergy, which is completely different from food poisoning.

I have no idea, but the real question is...WHY would you want to!!!!

You only have food poisoning from bad oysters. If the oysters are good you shouldn't have a problem with them.

Yes just because you had food poisoning from them does not mean you have to stop eating them, they were probably handled improperly.

No its not true.

Just make sure they don't stink next time you eat them...and that they look the right colour/texture etc.

You may have gotten a bad batch of oysters the first time around. Ask your MD....

If it was food poisoning, you should be fine, as long as the oysters are fresh. If it was an ALLERGY, you are in for a world of trouble and should avoid them like the plague.

No , I dont think it is true , you may have a psychological barrier associated with the eating of them however and asociate the sight of them with vomiting it is your bodies way of protecting you .

But its lke riding a hourse you just have to get on and ride again !!!!!

of course you can eat them again!

it just might have been a dodgy one you ate before

Yes and no depending on how you look at it.

When you get food poisoning off something, ate something that made you feel sick or even threw up after a night of drinking then you'd feel sick if you ate that food again. It has nothing to do with the food and everything to do with the way the mind works.

You see, the mind doesn't know why you were sick and really doesn't care. All it knows is that this food is associated with being sick and that means that in order to protect the body, it brings back those feelings when you're confronted with the food or sometimes even think about eating it. It's a type of defense mechanism.

For example, when I was younger I used to love gin & tonics and whenever I'd go out that was the drink I would order. One night I got extremely sick on them and it wasn't for another 10 years that I was able to drink one without feeling nauseous.

So there's actually nothing wrong with eating oysters provided they're fresh.

Don't risk it, they are not that nice anyway

No, you can eat them again but I had food poisoning from oysters and I haven't eaten seafood since. That was 2 years ago!

whoever told you that gave you some false information...if they were bad once doesnt mean they will be bad another time...just make sure they are cleaned well and fresh...i love oysters myself..

No, this is not true. Just make sure that you are over it now, that the oysters are ultra fresh and you should be fine. Unless if you are actually allergic to them, then you would have to steer clear, though why anyone would want to eat oysters is quite beyond me. Tis a puzzlement to me!!!

Yes thats true
