Why is it that ice cubes make fizzy drinks go flat.?!

Question:

Why is it that ice cubes make fizzy drinks go flat.?

They're water, lemonade is water, too for example, so why should the melted ice cube take the fizz out? Is it a dilution thing?

Answers:
From a chemists point of view the CO2 coming out of a drink is an endothermic process, or if you heat the drink up more CO2 will come out of the liquid. Cooling it down however keeps the CO2 in solution and putting the gas in the drink is an exothermic reaction or the reaction gives out heat so they cool it down. Confused?

Well cooling makes CO2 stay in
Heating makes the gas escape as you all know.

Ice would provide more surface area or what we call nucleation points for the gas to escape but this only would be very minor.

As the ice melts, the liquid is gently heated up as it reaches the temperature of its surroundings and the drink becomes gradually flat since the ice has melted and the drink has been slightly heated up.

When the ice cube melts, it dilutes the drink.

Yup when the ice cube melts it adds water diluting it

Dilution! Thecolder the liquid, the slower the reduction in fiss. however a room temp drink will go flat quickly...ice to very cold liquid is always best

its the same with straws, not sure y though!

Yeah, the amount of water floods out the fizziness

Because when ice cubes melt, the ratio of still to fizzy water increases, so there's less fizz over a larger amount of drink, hence you get a flat drink.

yeah it dilutes your fizzy drink

i would say dilution too

it doesn't it just covers the top of the pop and pretty much squeezes the carbonation out. The water seperates and sits on top so is most likely a sort of smothering thing like what you can do to fire.

it could be that the ice waters it down . or if it is open it could go flat because of the air.

because ice is increasing the surface area exposed to the disolved carbon dioxide, using it up from the supply available.

When you add ice the drink fizzes up. this is something called a nucleation point. The sharp edges form bubbles and the gas is released quickly. This helps to make the drink go flat as does the melting of the ice adding water to the drink.

Yes It Diludes due to the water in the cube it fizzes the soda out making it taste watery with out the gases

hi

u r adding water it the fizz
