Is it normal for a watermelon to have a hole in the middle?!

Question:

Is it normal for a watermelon to have a hole in the middle?

I bought a watermelon yesterday and I just cracked it open. I saw the oddest thing there was no damage to the outside of the watermelon and it tastes great only there is this big hollow spot in the middle as if someone carved out the center. I've never seen this before. There were no bugs in the watermelon. Is it safe to eat? How is it possible to have a hole in the middle with no damage to the outside?

Answers:
It happens a lot, especially if you literally "crack it open," rather than cutting it open (I'm nor sure what you exactly meant.) The hole should not be a nice, neat circle, however. It should follow the "grain" of the watermelon's meat.

i don't think so..

No idea...sorry.

no...it mustve grown with a mutation

It depends how big the hole is. If it was about an inch in diameter or under, it could be that a worm ate its way through the watermelon. If that is the case, DON'T EAT IT! You could get sick from the worm. If the hole is bigger, it could have been drilled by the factory because factories need to test some of their watermelons (or any food) to make sure they are safe and delicious. They are supposed to discard of the test foods after, but maybe they accidentally sold it.

Hope this helps!

Yeah that's safe to eat. As long as no bugs or mold were found. Sometimes fruits and vegetables grow a weird shape, or have a lump of some sort. Haven't you ever cut into a bell pepper and saw a 2nd baby one growing inside? It's the cutest thing and very safe to eat. Same idea here...just make sure the hole isn't very tiny. That could mean a worm or some other insect ate through it!

Enjoy your summer watermelon!

i have never heard of a watermelon with a hole in the middle, but maybe it was getting spoiled.

Yes that sounds normal to me, I never saw one look any other way.

no

Hi..
That is possible,,,they are all natural...all nature comes with all shapes & sizes..don't we?

Only very precious creatures have a hole in the middle: jelly fish, firestone tires, donuts, girls. It`s rather a sign of top quality I would guess.
